Pandora’s Box Problem with Order Constraints

چکیده

The Pandora’s Box problem, originally posed by Weitzman in 1979, models selection from a set of random-valued alternatives—the “boxes”—when evaluation is costly. showed that the problem admits simple threshold-based solution considers options decreasing order reservation value, proxy for actual value boxes exploration process. We study first time this when which are opened constrained, forcing to account both depth search, as opening box gives access more boxes, and breadth, there many directions explore. Despite these difficulties, we show greedy optimal strategies exist can be efficiently computed tree-like constraints. also prove finding adaptive search NP-hard approximate (up certain constant) matroid constraints applied further restrict may or given reachability on directed acyclic graph. complement hardness result giving efficient approximation algorithms, exploiting low adaptivity gap carefully relaxed version problem. Quadratic third-order tensor optimization problem with quadratic constraints

Quadratically constrained quadratic programs (QQPs) problems play an important modeling role in many diverse problems. These problems are in general NP hard and numerically intractable. Semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations often provide good approximate solutions to these hard problems. For several special cases of QQP, e.g., convex programs and trust region subproblems, SDP relaxation pr...

L1 Projections with Box Constraints

We study the L1 minimization problem with additional box constraints. We motivate the problem with two different views of optimality considerations. We look into imposing such constraints in projected gradient techniques and propose a worst case linear time algorithm to perform such projections. We demonstrate the merits and effectiveness of our algorithms on synthetic as well as real experiments.

Single Machine Scheduling Problem with Precedence Constraints and Deteriorating Jobs

This paper considers the single machine scheduling problem with precedence constraints and deteriorating jobs. A mathematical model based on binary integer programming (BIP) is developed. By these precedence constraints, jobs can not start before completion of its all predecessors. The represented model is in two steps, in step one the earliest starting time of each job is computed, then the re...

Merging of Bézier curves with box constraints

In this paper, we present a novel approach to the problem of merging of Bézier curves with respect to the L2-norm. We give illustrative examples to show that the solution of the conventional merging problem may not be suitable for further modification and applications. As in the case of the degree reduction problem, we apply the so-called restricted area approach – proposed recently in (P. Gosp...

A whole box of Pandoras: systems, boundaries and free will in quantum theory

It is shown that the paradoxes of quantum theory can be traced to an assumption that observers can know which physical degrees of freedom are causally responsible for each of their experiences. The untenability of this assumption is demonstrated, and a quantum theory without it is proposed. Removing this assumption from quantum theory sheds new light on the nature of semantics, and perhaps also...
